USS Animus • Travelling Trekkies

One of the more unusual aspects of serving during the Covid-19 pandemic has been the suspension of many traditional away missions and cultural visits. While travel restrictions have prevented crews from gathering in person, Starfleet officers have found new ways to continue exploring and learning about the worlds around them.

Recently I received a transmission from Captain Cyndi Valdez of the USS Atlantis in Region 10. As lockdown restrictions remained in effect within her patrol sector, Captain Valdez was unable to undertake a planned visit to The Alamo in San Antonio, Texas. Instead, she shared photographs and information about the historic site so that fellow members of Starfleet International could experience it remotely.

The Alamo is one of the most significant historical landmarks in the United States and is remembered for its role in the Texas Revolution. Originally established as a mission, the site has become an enduring symbol of perseverance and sacrifice in Human history.

While reviewing the material provided by Captain Valdez, I was reminded that exploration is not always measured by the distance travelled. Sometimes it is enough to learn from the experiences and observations of others. Though I would have preferred to walk the grounds myself, the opportunity to study the site's history and significance was greatly appreciated.

The willingness of Starfleet members to share their local history, culture and experiences during this challenging period has ensured that our community remains connected despite the distances between us.

I would like to thank Captain Valdez and the crew of the USS Atlantis for allowing me to participate in their virtual mission and for sharing a small piece of Texas with the rest of the fleet.
